What happened

The call to arms of 20 November 1910 against the thirty-year rule of Porfirio Díaz began a decade of revolution in which perhaps a million people died or left the country. Madero, Zapata, Villa, Carranza and Obregón fought for different Mexicos: free elections, land for villages, a strong state. The Constitution of 1917 wrote social rights into law for the first time anywhere, with land and subsoil belonging to the nation. In the 1920s and 1930s the state rebuilt the country through schools, murals and, under Lázaro Cárdenas, land distribution and the nationalisation of oil in 1938, while a single party took shape that ruled until 2000.
