What happened

Since 1990 almost every Spanish-speaking country has chosen its governments at the ballot box, though democracy has been tested by economic collapse (Argentina in 2001), violence linked to drug trafficking, corruption scandals and, in Venezuela, an authoritarian turn and the largest displacement in the region's modern history. Cities grew into megacities; a Spanish-language culture of television, music and literature crossed borders; and millions moved north to the United States, where Spanish is now spoken at home by tens of millions. The bicentennials of independence between 2010 and 2025 were a moment for each country to ask what the republics had achieved.
