What happened

After his disaster in Russia in 1812, Napoleon faced an alliance of Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden. From 16 to 19 October 1813 perhaps half a million soldiers or more fought outside Leipzig, probably the largest battle in history up to then. Napoleon lost. As his army withdrew, a bridge over the Elster was blown up too early, trapping thousands of his men. Around 90,000 soldiers were killed or wounded, and the city was left full of the wounded and the sick. The battle ended Napoleon's rule over Germany. For its centenary in 1913 a 91-metre monument was opened in Leipzig.
