What happened
Prince Wenceslas (Václav), a Christian ruler, was killed by his brother Boleslav at Stará Boleslav on 28 September — in 935, according to most historians, though older accounts say 929. He was soon venerated as a martyr and became the patron saint of the Czech lands. His statue stands at the top of Wenceslas Square, the English carol Good King Wenceslas is about him, and 28 September is the Day of Czech Statehood.
