What happened
On 27 May 1942 two Czechoslovak soldiers who had parachuted in from Britain months before, Jozef Gabčík and Jan Kubiš, attacked Reinhard Heydrich, the Nazi ruler of the Protectorate, in Prague; he died on 4 June. The reprisals were savage. On 10 June the village of Lidice was destroyed: its men were shot, its women sent to a concentration camp, and most of its children murdered. Betrayed, the two and five other paratroopers died on 18 June fighting in the Church of Saints Cyril and Methodius in Prague, in its choir loft and its crypt.
