What happened
Prince Rastislav of Great Moravia, the first large Slavic state in the region, asked the Byzantine emperor for teachers who could preach in the Slavs' own language. Two brothers from Thessaloniki, Constantine (later called Cyril) and Methodius, came in 863. Constantine made the first Slavic alphabet, Glagolitic, and they translated the liturgy. Great Moravia fell apart in the early 900s, but the two are remembered with a public holiday on 5 July.
