Qué pasó
When the monarchy fell in the Russian Empire in the spring of 1917, Ukrainian parties and societies formed the Central Rada in Kyiv. Its chairman was the historian Mykhailo Hrushevsky, the author of a many-volume history of Ukraine. At first the Rada asked for autonomy within a democratic Russia. After the Bolsheviks took power in Petrograd, in November 1917 it proclaimed the Ukrainian People's Republic. Hrushevsky later returned to Soviet Kyiv, was exiled to Moscow and died in 1934.
