In the west of Rus', Prince Danylo united Galicia and Volhynia into one strong state. In 1253, at Dorohochyn, he was crowned king with a crown sent by the Pope, and he is known as Danylo, King of Rus'. He founded towns, among them Kholm, his capital. The town of Lviv, first mentioned in the chronicle in 1256, is named after his son Lev, and the lion has been its symbol ever since. The Galician–Volhynian state lasted until the middle of the fourteenth century.
