Qué pasó
Taras Shevchenko was born a serf in 1814. In St Petersburg artists noticed his talent, and in 1838 his freedom was bought with money raised by a lottery for a portrait by Karl Briullov. In 1840 his first book of poems, the Kobzar, came out, and it changed Ukrainian literature. For his poems he was sent as a soldier to the far south-east of the empire, beyond Orenburg, for ten years. He died in 1861, aged 47, and was buried at Kaniv on the Dnipro, as he had asked in his poem Zapovit.
