Qué pasó

On 27 May 1832 some 20,000 to 30,000 people climbed to the ruined castle of Hambach near Neustadt in the Palatinate, which then belonged to Bavaria. Under black, red and gold flags, speakers demanded national unity, freedom of the press and of assembly, and the sovereignty of the people. The colours went back to the uniforms of a volunteer corps in the wars against Napoleon and to the student movement of 1815. The authorities struck back: organisers were prosecuted or fled abroad, and the German Confederation imposed harsher controls. Black, red and gold, though, became the colours of German democracy.
