Qué pasó
On the evening of 9 November 1989 Günter Schabowski, a member of the East German leadership, read out a new travel rule at a press conference. Asked when it applied, he looked through his notes and said that, as far as he knew, it applied immediately. The news spread on West German television, and thousands of East Berliners went to the border crossings. At Bornholmer Straße, late that night, the officer in charge, Harald Jäger, gave up and opened the gate. Berliners from East and West celebrated on the Wall until morning. The GDR had lost control, though it would exist for almost another year.
