Qué pasó
The war began in 1618 with a Protestant revolt in Bohemia and grew into a European war fought mostly on German soil, by armies from the Empire, Spain, Sweden and France. Soldiers lived off the land, and hunger and plague killed far more people than battles. The worst massacre came at Magdeburg on 20 May 1631, when the Catholic League's army stormed the city and more than 20,000 people died. Peace was signed in Münster and Osnabrück on 24 October 1648. Historians estimate that the Empire lost at least 15 to 20 percent of its people, with some regions losing more than half and others hardly touched.
