Napoleon had redrawn the map of Germany. In July 1806 a group of German princes signed up to the Confederation of the Rhine under his protection and then left the Empire, and Napoleon demanded that Emperor Francis II give up the imperial title. On 6 August 1806 a herald announced in Vienna that Francis laid down the crown of the Holy Roman Empire. He had already made himself Emperor of Austria in 1804. Whether he had the right to dissolve the Empire was disputed, but after more than eight hundred years it was over.
