In Mainz, around 1450, Johannes Gutenberg developed a way of printing with movable letters cast in metal and a press modelled on the wine press. Between about 1452 and 1454 his workshop printed the Bible in Latin: roughly 180 copies, most on paper and about 30 on vellum. 49 copies survive, some of them incomplete. Printing spread across Europe within a few decades, and without it the Reformation would hardly have been possible. Gutenberg himself fell into debt and lost much of his workshop to his financier. The university in Mainz is named after him.
