Qué pasó
On 20 June 1948 the Western Allies brought in a new currency, the Deutsche Mark, in their zones, and within days the shops filled up. The Soviet Union answered on 24 June by cutting all road, rail and water routes into West Berlin. The Americans and the British supplied the city of more than two million people from the air instead. Berliners called the planes 'Rosinenbomber', raisin bombers, and the pilot Gail Halvorsen became famous for dropping sweets for children on little parachutes. On 12 May 1949 the Soviets lifted the blockade. In West German eyes, the former occupiers had become protectors.
