Qué pasó
In 1968 the party leader Alexander Dubček loosened censorship and promised socialism with a human face. On the night of 20–21 August, armies of the Soviet Union, Poland, Hungary and Bulgaria invaded; East German troops stood ready at the border but were kept out at the last moment. The reforms were reversed in the years that followed, called normalisation, and Soviet troops stayed until 1991.
