What happened
The chronicles date the beginning of the Kyiv Caves Monastery to 1051, when the monk Anthony settled in a cave on the hills above the Dnipro. Monks dug more caves and passages, where many of them were later buried; pilgrims still walk through them with candles. The monastery became a centre of learning and of the chronicles themselves. It holds the title of lavra, given to the most important monasteries, and together with St Sophia it has been on the UNESCO World Heritage list since 1990.
