What happened
After the Galician–Volhynian line died out, its lands were divided between Poland and Lithuania; most of today's Ukraine came under the Grand Duchy of Lithuania. In 1356 King Casimir III of Poland granted Lviv Magdeburg law, a German model of town self-government. The town elected its own council and court, and its merchants and craftsmen organised themselves in guilds. Many other towns, Kyiv among them, later received the same rights. Lviv's market square and old town date from these centuries of trade.
