What happened
In September 1621 a large Ottoman army under Sultan Osman II reached the fortress of Khotyn on the Dniester. A Polish-Lithuanian army, joined by tens of thousands of Cossacks under Hetman Petro Sahaidachny, held its fortified camp for more than a month, until the two sides made peace in October. Sahaidachny was wounded and died in Kyiv in the spring of 1622. He had also enrolled the whole Cossack army in the Kyiv Brotherhood, tying the Cossacks to the city's church and school.
