What happened
In the wars between France and the emperor Charles V for control of Italy, an imperial army of German Landsknechts and Spanish soldiers, unpaid and out of control, stormed Rome on 6 May 1527; the emperor had not ordered it. Their commander, the Duke of Bourbon, was killed on the walls that morning. Pope Clement VII fled along a raised corridor to Castel Sant'Angelo while 147 of his 189 Swiss Guards were killed defending him. The city was looted for months. New Swiss Guards still take their oath every 6 May.
