What happened

After defeating Mark Antony and Cleopatra, Octavian, Caesar's adopted heir, was the only master of the Roman world. On 16 January 27 BC the Senate gave him the name Augustus, the revered one. He kept the forms of the Republic but held the real power for forty years, and historians date the Roman Empire from here. In 8 BC the month Sextilis was renamed August after him. The word Ferragosto is traced to feriae Augusti, the August holidays, but no ancient source says that Augustus founded them.
