What happened
King Charles of the Franks, Charlemagne, had conquered the Lombard kingdom in 774 and made himself its king. On Christmas Day 800, in St Peter's in Rome, Pope Leo III crowned him emperor, reviving the title in the West. For centuries afterwards German kings came south to be crowned in Italy, and the quarrels between emperors, popes and Italian cities shaped the country's history. The pope, meanwhile, ruled lands of his own in central Italy that lasted until 1870.
