What happened
Frederick II of Hohenstaufen, emperor and King of Sicily, grew up in Palermo and spoke several languages; contemporaries called him stupor mundi, the wonder of the world. On 5 June 1224 he founded a university in Naples by letter, to train the lawyers and officials of his kingdom: it is often called the first state university, and it carries his name today. At his court the poets of the Sicilian School wrote the first large body of love poetry in an Italian vernacular, and Giacomo da Lentini is credited with inventing the sonnet.
