What happened
Dante Alighieri, a poet and one of Florence's leaders, belonged to the White Guelphs. When the Black Guelphs took the city with the pope's backing, he was sentenced on 27 January 1302, while away from Florence, and on 10 March condemned to be burned alive if he ever returned. He never did. In exile he wrote the Divine Comedy, in the Florentine of everyday speech rather than Latin, and it made that language the basis of Italian. He died in Ravenna in September 1321 and is buried there; every September Florence still sends oil for the lamp at his tomb.
