What happened

According to the Instituto Cervantes's yearbook El español en el mundo 2025, presented in Madrid on 28 October 2025, almost 635 million people speak Spanish: about 520 million with native command (passing 500 million for the first time), plus people with limited competence and some 24.6 million learners. By native speakers Spanish is the third language in the world, after Mandarin Chinese and Hindi and ahead of English. Around 460 million native speakers live in the Spanish-speaking countries; the rest are concentrated in the United States, Brazil and the European Union, which are also where most learners are. The yearbook projects that, if teaching keeps growing, learners could reach 100 million before the end of the century; it also notes that in the United States younger generations acquire less Spanish.
