What happened
Proclaimed on 14 April 1931 after republican candidates won the big cities in municipal elections, the Second Republic gave Spain a democratic constitution in December 1931 with no official religion, votes for women and the possibility of regional self-government. It opened thousands of schools and tried to reform the land and the army, but it was hit by the world depression, strikes, a failed rising in Asturias in 1934 and growing violence between left and right. The military coup of 18 July 1936 ended it, though a Republican government fought on until 1939 and later lived on in exile.
