What happened
In March 1848 revolution spread through the German states. That spring men across the Confederation elected the first all-German parliament, which met on 18 May 1848 in St Paul's Church in Frankfurt; so many of its members were academics that it was nicknamed the parliament of professors. It passed a catalogue of basic rights in December 1848 and a constitution in March 1849, and offered the imperial crown to King Frederick William IV of Prussia. He refused it, and by the summer of 1849 the revolution had been crushed. But the basic rights of 1848 lived on in the Weimar constitution and the Basic Law.
