What happened
On 31 October 1517 Martin Luther, a monk and professor in Wittenberg, sent 95 theses against the sale of indulgences to the Archbishop of Mainz. Whether he also nailed them to the door of the Castle Church is disputed: the story was first told by Melanchthon thirty years later. Printed copies spread fast. Outlawed after the Diet of Worms in 1521, Luther was hidden at the Wartburg, where he translated the New Testament into German in about eleven weeks. It appeared in 1522, the whole Bible in 1534, and his translation shaped written German like no other book. 31 October, Reformation Day, is a public holiday in nine German states.
