After White Mountain the Habsburgs made Catholicism the only permitted religion (1627), and German gained equal standing with Czech. Protestants had to convert or leave. Among those who left was Jan Amos Komenský, Comenius, later the last bishop of the Unity of Brethren, who wrote pioneering books on education in exile and is remembered as the teacher of nations. Later Czech writers called the era that followed Temno, the darkness.
