What happened

On 28 October 1918, as Austria-Hungary collapsed, the independent Czechoslovak state was declared in Prague. Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, a philosopher who had worked for independence abroad during the war, was elected its first president that November, in his absence. The First Republic lasted twenty years and was the only country in Central Europe that stayed a parliamentary democracy the whole time, until Munich in 1938. 28 October is the main Czech national holiday.
