What happened

The foundation stone of the stone bridge over the Vltava was laid in 1357. A popular modern theory, from the astronomer Zdeněk Horský in 1979, puts it on 9 July at 5:31 in the morning — a moment that reads the same both ways, 1-3-5-7-9-7-5-3-1 — but no document records the day. The bridge is traditionally credited to Peter Parler's workshop and took some fifty years to finish. It was simply the Stone Bridge until about 1870, when it was named after Charles. Most of the statues came between 1707 and 1714.
