What happened

Protestant nobles, angry that their religious freedoms were being broken, threw two royal governors, Martinic and Slavata, and their secretary out of a window of the Old Royal Palace at Prague Castle on 23 May 1618. All three survived the fall. The revolt of the Czech estates that followed became the start of the Thirty Years' War. Because there were earlier defenestrations, in 1419 and 1483, this one is called the second or the third, depending on who counts.
